Full Description:

Kashmiri silver of this period was highly desired by the British Empire and much was imported. Rarely does it ever carry any markings to help the researcher trace their object back to its original maker, but what is certain in this case is that this superb bowl must have been produced by a highly accomplished silversmith. The Kashmiri workshops developed many different decorative styles, with this bowl being a good example of the foliage type rendered through repoussé and chasing. It dates to the latter half of the 19th century and richly depicts a nexus of intertwining leaves, flower buds and stems, all set against a minutely textured background. Three further buds form the bowl’s legs while a fully opened flower sits resplendent at its centre.

Similar bowls are described in Delight in Design, Indian Silver for the Raj by Vidya Dehejia[1].
