Full Description:

The kirach sword is one of the rarest forms of Indian sword—usually reserved for the warriors who possessed the greatest skills in battle. This example’s blade is mostly straight, curving forwards slightly to increase its impact in the cut, and it is probably a later addition to the hilt, perhaps being from the 18th or 19th centuries. It is stiff and heavy, and made of pattern-welded steel with a long, wide fuller. The edge is polished and sharp.

The hilt’s large flowers and naturalistic foliage are rendered in gold and suggest a Mughal or Deccani origin of the 17th century. The pommel’s long stalk, designed to allow the occasional two-handed use of the sword, retains its pierced steel tag.

The sword is accompanied by a contemporary velvet covered scabbard.
